General CM Information for Parents
For information about the overall objectives of Certificate of Merit
and about the annual evaluation process, click on the link “What
is the Certificate of Merit,” found in the box on the top
right of this web page. After reading this information, any questions
you may have must be referred to your student’s teacher.
General CM Information for MTAC Teachers
Choice of Level: Teachers must choose student levels, and with great
care. For a student just entering the CM curriculum, it often works
well to select a level a bit below the student’s average repertoire
level. This lower level is likely to match the student’s theory
level. The goal is to help a student be successful as they begin
CM. Progress through CM is not a race. Students who make fast progress
may skip levels in the future. If a student fails a level evaluation
(either in theory or performance), he or she must repeat the same
level the following year. The student will not be able to go on
to a higher level until that level is passed.
Repertoire Selection and Convention Application:
Teachers must select at least one piece from the current CM Syllabus
for the instrument. The current syllabi date as follows: Keyboard,
revised 2007; Woodwinds, revised 2011 (for 2012 CM); Strings, revised
2006. Syllabi are available for purchase at the MTAC Store on the
mtac.org
website. Repertoire and convention intention is entered online only
between January 2 and January 22. At that time, there will be places
to note siblings, ensembles, and carpools.
Convention Eligibility: To qualify for Convention,
keyboard students must play all pieces memorized and receive at
least a “5-” out of a possible “5+” rating.
The student must receive an “excellent” or “good”
rating in Technique and Sight-Reading, along with 80 percent or
higher in Theory and Ear-Training. The same requirements apply for
Winds and Strings, but memorization requirements are different.
Please refer to the mtac.org
website for specifics.
Final Convention Applications: There will be a
Final Convention Application Fee of $20.00 charged per student at
the time the teacher registers students for Convention, which must
occur before the deadline of April 15. This is a nonrefundable application
fee, and will be paid either by credit card or by PayPal. All students
attending the MTAC Convention, along with all family members coming
to hear the student play, are admitted to the Convention at no extra
charge, and are invited to attend any Convention events. The Final
Convention Application is handled online at the mtac.org
website under CM Students/Student List-Final Convention Application.
Panel: Panel pamphlets are available online by
going to the mtac.org
website (CM Resources, Documents link). Please download a copy and
refer to the requirements for your discipline. Literature must be
entered on line between January 2 and 10. If a student wishes to
revert back to Advanced and not go to Panel, the deadline for this
is January 15. There is no refund for this change. Dates for strings
and woodwind Panel Auditions are listed above. Dates for keyboard
Panel Auditions will be announced when the dates have been finalized.
Panel Finals for all instruments will be held March 25-27.
Senior Medallions: Senior medallions are awarded
to high school seniors who pass CM three out of four years of high
school, one being their senior year, and satisfactorily complete
a minimum of Level 7. To accompany the medal, the Branch usually
offers monetary awards. Though we cannot guarantee monetary awards
every year, the Branch will make every effort to continue this tradition.
When registering seniors, be sure to check the box by Senior Award
for those seniors who are eligible for the award. Failure to do
so will mean the senior is not tracked for eligibility leading up
to and during the evaluation.
Convention Theme Recital for 2011: Composers Born
in Russia. Please refer to the mtac.org
website for more details.
CM Change of Teacher After Lockdown: In the event a change of teachers
occurs after registration closes on November 15, the student may
be evaluated at the branch of the new teacher. However, the new
teacher will need the consent of the old teacher. A Change of Teacher
form (available on the mtac.org
website) must be signed by both teachers and forwarded to the CM
Branch Chair of the new branch.
Improvisation: Improvisation is an optional part
of the CM evaluation. We encourage teachers to become familiar with
the MTAC Improvisation Syllabus to see how this might be used as
part of the evaluation.
Online Resources: The State mtac.org
website contains helpful information. After login, from the Teacher
Home Page click on CM Resources. Included on this site, in addition
to CM documents, are newsletters. Read the last few newsletters
for updates on theory and literature changes, as well as changes
in procedures for 2012.
Teachers will need to have access to a computer with Internet capabilities
and an email address. You will be able to add, change and finalize
your list until 11:59 p.m. November 15, 2011. If you are registering
students who participated in CM last year or earlier, once you have
recalled the student to your list, you will need to change their
CM levels and school grade levels. You will need the date of birth
and grade level of your new students.
Teachers must register students through the MTAC website (mtac.org)
by entering username and password. Teachers who do not have this
information should contact the Branch CM Chair. Students may
only be registered between September 15 and November 15.
After November 15 the system is locked down. THERE WILL BE NO LATE
REGISTRATION. After that date, teachers will not be able to add,
change, or delete a student.
Once a teacher has completed registration of all students, the
Student Fees list will reflect the correct total fees for all students.
5-Step Registration Process
for Teachers: On the MTAC website (mtac.org):1.
Log in and register your students. If you need help, click on the
Help link on the Teacher Home Page. Double check all information—including
spelling of students’ names, student grade levels and CM levels.
(This information cannot be changed once the November 15 deadline
is past.) 2. Print out the form that shows the total number of students
registered. 3. Print out the Student Fees list that shows the total
amount of the fees due. 4. Read the MTACSD Work Agreement Form,
available as a separate link on the Branch website CM page. Make
a copy of the work Agreement Form and sign the second page. 5. Mail
these 3 items, along with a single check, made out to MTAC San Diego,
to the following address: Connie Gale, 509 Roselle Avenue, El Cajon,
CA 92021. This must be postmarked no later than November 16, 2011.
