In 1993 Helen B. Goodlin
donated a significant amount of money for scholarships to young
musicians, to be managed by the Music Teachers’ Association
of CA, San Diego Branch (MTACSD). A foundation was established in
her name and is operated by MTACSD through the San Diego Foundation.
Prizes are awarded to the winners of the annual scholarship competition.
The fund has been fortunate in attracting annual contributions
from other charitable foundations.
The William E. Schmidt Foundation supports the Chet and June Schmidt
Award, a prize of $3200,
divided between the first place keyboard and instrumental prizes.
The Apollo award, funded by an anonymous donor, supports
the first place winner of the senior
instrumental division. Another donor supported the vocal prize for
one year.
MTAC and San Diego County musicians of all ages also
participate in a Bachathon each
January to help increase the principal of the Goodlin scholarships.
Last year approximately
$3000 was raised for the awards.
Your support will allow MTACSD to expand the scholarship
programs available to the dedicated
and talented young musicians of San Diego County. Please consider
joining the parents, teachers, student alumni, and businesses who
contribute to the H.B. Goodlin Foundation.
Your contribution can be sent directly to:

Foundation, MTACSD. The S.D. Foundation will send a letter of receipt
for your tax purposes and will notify us of your donation.
Thank you for your consideration!
The Music Teachers’ Association of California, San
Diego Branch (MTACSD), believing that all children deserve the opportunity
to enjoy the benefits of a music education, has created a sponsorship
program whereby talented, deserving students have the opportunity
to receive individualized music instruction.
MTACSD seeks to address the needs of San Diego’s underprivileged
children with our program titled “Kids Into Music” (KIM). KIM supports
music students ages 4 to 18 by providing financial assistance for
lesson tuition with an MTACSD teacher, including an instrument to
practice on and other educational materials.
How can you help? You can
become a KIM Sponsor Sponsorship can be made at various sponsorship
levels, or at any amount you choose. Your donation will be monitored
and directed by the KIM Director, Tracy Lovley (a former MTACSD
President), and by the student’s private teacher.
KIM has a specific set of criteria
used to ensure that the student is interested and deserving. Applicants
must write a letter expressing their desire for music lessons and
they must meet with the KIM committee for that personal connection.
A letter stating financial need is also required from the parent
or guardian, as well as the most recent U.S. tax return. Additional
letters of recommendation are requested from school counselors or
other people who know the family. Upon approval by the KIM committee
and once funding is confirmed, arrangements are made with a local
MTAC teacher to begin teaching the KIM student. We invite you to
check out our sponsorship levels.
