MTAC-SAN DIEGO BRANCH 2008 VOCE COMPETITION
The 2008 MTAC-San Diego Branch VOCE Competition was successfully held on February 17, 2008 at Hammond Ashley Violins in San Diego. The competition brought together over thirty contestants from eight studios. After the presentation of this year’s VOCE Branch winners, participants and judges exchanged ideas during the Meet the Judges Reception.

2008 Jury Panel Biographies
JEFF EDMONS is now in his eleventh year as Artistic Director of the San Diego Youth Symphony. Under his direction, the Youth Symphony has experienced tremendous growth, both in enrollment and in its level of musical achievement, performing the most difficult works in classical repertoire at the highest standard attainable by a youth orchestra. The orchestra's exemplary standards of skill and musicianship have afforded them the opportunity to participate in the most prestigious international festivals and perform with eminent artists from around the world.
Under Mr. Edmons direction, the Youth Symphony boasts a strong international presence as well as setting the benchmark for excellence in the United States. Named as one of San Diego Magazine's "50 People to watch in 1997." Mr. Edmons has dedicated himself to promoting youth music and music education. He has led youth, collegiate and professional orchestras in critically acclaimed performances throughout the United States, as well as Mexico, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Finland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Switzerland. He has received numerous local and national invitations and awards for his achievements in music education. Mr. Edmons has also been featured in numerous articles and journals honoring his work and has been the subject of documentaries on CNN, Fox Television, National Public Radio and many others.
GLENN GRAB has been a professional cellist for over 40 years and been active in commercial and classical music in Southern California since the age of 19. As a classical artist, Mr. Grab has soloed with the Burbank Symphony Orchestra, Westwood Symphony, Palmdale Orchestra, COTA Orchestra among others. He has also worked regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pasadena Symphony, Glendale Symphony, Pacific Symphony, New West Orchestra and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
As a chamber musician, Mr. Grab has performed with esteemed artists such as Ron Leonard, Sherry Klos and Elizabeth Pitcairn. As a commercial artist, Mr. Grab has worked on hundreds of film scores since 1970 for major film studios and television stations such as MGM, Soy, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC among others. He can be heard on countless film scores of Steven Spielberg, Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Clint Eastwood films as well as numerous Japanese movies. His studio gigs include recordings with prominent artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Donna Summers, Kenny G, and Beyonce among others. Mr. Grab is also a much sort after teacher whose students have gone on to attend prominent universities such as Harvard, Yale, USC, UCLA, UCI and CSUN. His son cellist Daniel Grab is currently in the Graduate Studies program at USC.
ABEL DELGADO received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California (USC) in flute performance and orchestral conducting, respectively. He currently holds principal flute positions with the El Paso Opera Orchestra and the Cypress Pops Orchestra and the Southeast Symphony. Past soloist appearances include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, YMF Debut Orchestra, Cypress Pops and the USC Symphony.
As a conductor, Mr. Delgado has led the YMF Debut Orchestra at the 2005 Grammy’s Salute to Classical Music honoring Esa-Pekka Salonen, Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In the summer of 2007 he had the honor of leading the ensemble for Merv Griffin’s memorial service. In addition, Mr. Delgado has conducted the USC Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, Chamber Ensemble of Rome, served as Assistant Conductor for Jorge Mester and the Pasadena Symphony, as well as, Michael Tilson Thomas at Disney Hall. Currently he serves as the Guest Conductor for Special Events for the Young Musicians Foundation (YMF).
When not in performance, Mr. Delgado serves as the Director of Development for the USC Thornton School of Music and Music Director & Conductor for The Harmony Project, a non-profit organization that offers music education to underserved children. A collaboration between the Harmony Project and Los Angeles City College (LACC) has resulted in Mr. Delgado’s position at LACC as an Adjunct Instructor
